COVID-19, self-isolation and connected care: our statement

19 March 2020 Anthropos

Please note: the situation is different in countries around the world. Some countries are in lockdown, making remote monitoring of older and at-risk people even more important. This statement was updated on 5th October 2020. We will update it as and when the situation develops.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the kind of global challenges that have not been experienced in generations.

The restrictions on movement and social interaction and requirements for self-isolation are affecting everyone, but those aged over 70 are being hit hardest. The anxiety levels of families separated from their elderly relatives are high. Providing them with reassurance and insight has never been more important.

Although COVID-19 is not the only illness that puts older people and others at risk every day, it has truly highlighted their vulnerability. There has been a need to find new and better ways to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of the elderly during this crisis. The spread of the virus has shone a light on just how important connected care is today and will be in the future – regardless of whether there’s a pandemic happening.

The Anthropos Connected Care Platform was created to help older people stay well at home for longer. The platform uses smart technology to monitor what is happening in the home to identify indicators of impending or current problems so that timely actions can be taken. Looking for meaningful changes in patterns of behaviour can provide a better understanding of the wellbeing of an older person.

Our Connected Care Platform has been designed with care professionals to deliver that help. As an immediate step, we developed ways to get our technology installed into the homes of those in need, without putting them at undue risk.

Our platform is available through Home Instead Senior Care who have worked with us for over two years to co-design a solution that is right for older people and their families. Our work with them has allowed us to see the power of gaining insights into the lives of older people and using those insights to build better care plans and take more informed decisions about care.

You can find your local Home Instead Senior Care office here and learn more about how they combine technology and personal care to help older people stay safe and well in their own homes for longer.
